What is the Role of the Army?

The role of the army is different depending on who the army is loyal to. The army could be loyal to the government, or the people, or the country itself. For example, the recent events in Tunisia and Eygpt, the army was more loyal to their country, because they had acted like the peace-keepers, only keeping people from killing people. For another example, in ancient Rome, the army was more loyal to their general than their government. For when their general led them into war against the government, they had followed. Additionally, in the crisis of Libya, the army was more loyal to their government, for when the government said to stop the protestors, the army just killed them. In some cases the role of the army will change. For instance, the Roman army was first all for self-defense, but after many victories, the army changed from completely self-defense to being all for conquest. All in all, the role of the army will change depending on who the army's loyalty belongs to.
